Beekman Group: Building Greener Futures and Stronger Communities

The Beekman Group sees sustainability and community care as more than just initiatives. They are at the heart of who we are. As a family-owned business with deep roots in the South Coast, we have always believed in giving back to the communities that have supported us for generations. Throughout the year, our resorts, teams and guests have played an active role in making a positive difference.

Going Green for Guilt-Free Family Holidays

We believe that every small action counts when it comes to protecting the environment. Across our resorts, from KwaZulu-Natal to Mpumalanga and Mozambique, we are taking steps to reduce our footprint while inviting guests and teams to join the journey. Sustainability shapes how we operate every day.

Solar and Energy Initiatives
Energy efficiency guides daily operations. At Sunshine Bay Beach Club in Jeffreys Bay, gas geysers save electricity, and rainwater fills the pool, while staff recycle plastic and glass bottles. At Cayley Mountain Resort in the Drakensberg, recycled water irrigation keeps lawns and gardens healthy without overusing natural resources. These practical steps show how small changes create a big impact.

Animal and Biodiversity Initiatives
Protecting wildlife is central to Beekman’s approach. Hazyview Cabanas in Mpumalanga has bat houses to reduce mosquitoes and owl houses to control rodents. Qunu Falls Lodge in the Drakensberg has beehives with platforms, with plans to expand. At San Martinho Beach Club in Bilene, Mozambique, six beehives and monitored bat houses support natural pest control while remaining onsite. These efforts create thriving ecosystems for both guests and wildlife.

Food and Waste Initiatives
Reducing waste is a priority. Formosa Bay Resort in the Garden Route donates uneaten food to a local pig farm. Hazyview Cabanas composts vegetable scraps for its garden and donates old linen to orphanages. Qunu Falls Lodge feeds leftovers to pigs and composts organic material, while San Martinho Beach Club grows vegetables for resort use and repurposes old furniture for staff accommodation. These programmes transform waste into valuable resources and benefit local communities.

Water Conservation Initiatives
Water is carefully managed across all resorts. Formosa Bay Resort collects rainwater for gardens, while Hazyview Cabanas filters canal water, harvests rainwater, and uses treated wastewater for irrigation. Boulder Bay, on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, redirects water into JoJo tanks for gardens. Cayley Mountain Resort and San Martinho Beach Club rely on recycled and river water for irrigation. San Martinho Beach Club pumps are serviced regularly, and water tested every three months by an external provider in Xai-Xai to ensure safety and quality.

Community and Landscaping Initiatives
Our resorts actively collaborate with local communities to create greener spaces. Margate Beach Club runs weekly beach and area clean-ups with Tidy Towns and neighbours while planting palm trees and ground covers along the walkway. San Martinho Beach Club staff volunteer to support gardens, beehives and wildlife monitoring, strengthening shared responsibility for the environment.

Sustainable Operations and Green Practices
Sustainability is embedded in daily operations. San Martinho Beach Club uses plastic bottles instead of planting bags, while suppliers provide green and organic products wherever possible. Sand is managed carefully to accommodate the Marina and the new kitchen area. Paper, glass and aluminium recycling bins support cleaner, greener practices across all resorts.

Together, these initiatives show that sustainability is a journey, not a one-time project. By embedding eco-conscious practices into daily operations, Beekman Group creates opportunities for guests, staff and communities to actively contribute to a greener future.

At the heart of Beekman Group is Beekman Cares, and aside from our Go Green initiatives, we have our dedicated Corporate Social Investment programme.
