Plant and Paint Volunteer Day

67 Minutes at Thanda

Thanda is a community-based organisation that provides innovative solutions for sustainable development. They create safer, stronger communities by providing educational and skills-building opportunities to individuals. Their mission is to empower people to create positive change - change in individuals, change in their communities and eventually changes that impact the world.

After two years of on-the-ground research, co-founders Angela Larkan and Tyler Howard established Thanda in rural KwaZulu-Natal in 2008 to provide support for children through after-school programming. The model made use of existing resources within the community - unemployed youth were hired and trained to become After-school Facilitators and empty classrooms at local schools were used to host after-school sessions.

The Beekman Group responded to the Thanda Community Centre's call for a "Plant and Paint Volunteer Day" during International Mandela Day. We supplied the paint necessary to re-paint the centre and a bunch of staff volunteered to spend 67 minutes on Nelson Mandela Day, to help paint the centre, and plant trees and shrubs in the gardens of the centre. The community centre's new Agricultural Hub building was transformed into a vibrant and welcoming space for the 244 farmers enrolled in the Thanda Organic Farming programme.
